Synopsis ofthe program for December 19th:
GusBourneuf gave an extremely interesting presentation on the history of LibertyShips. Gus spent his entire careerworking with ships, and at one point was the chief surveyor for the AmericanBureau of Shipping. His background andexpertise shined through when discussing the history of merchant shipping inthe United States. Merchant marine activityhas been on a decline dating all the way back to the Civil War. However World War has proven to be a stimulusfor the marine shipping industry. Liberty Ships themselves were built to support the war effort andtransport materials over the oceans. Over 2,700 ships were built between 1941 and 1945. On average it took only 30 days to build aLiberty Ship. The ships were 440’ long,56’ wide with a draft of approximately 28’.
